collapsing pier

November 10, 2013

When plans don't work out sometimes the results from improvising work out just as well.  I had plans to get up early and photograph a sunrise at a great location I had picked out.  Well, when I got up, it was cloudy and a bit foggy but I decided to go anyway and hope the clouds cleared and if not I would just see what I could get.  I got to the old falling apart pier that I wanted to photograph and at first thought the conditions were terrible. It was overcast, slightly foggy and perfectly calm. The water and sky blended together making the horizon almost invisible, everything was just a nice smooth gradient of grey. Clearly no sunrise was going to be photographed.  So I decided to use the conditions to my advantage and create a different type of image. The result was the opposite of my original plan, instead of a colorful dramatic lighting and strong reflections, I created this black and white simplistic image. collapsing piersometimes when plans don't work out, improvising proves its worth.
