Sometimes impromptu trips pay off. In this case a spur of the moment decision to make an (what many may consider insane) 8.5 hour drive to the Appalachian mountains. I was seeking out fall colors and with any luck some bears and deer to photograph.
Due to a dry summer the hard mast and berry production was terrible. This is the main food source for black bears to fatten up on. So hungry bears were going places that they do not normally go to find food. This is bad for bears but good for me as a photographer. It meant there were lots of bears moving around and ready to be photographed. In my day and a half trip I saw 9 different bears and captured some great photographs.
